“It’s time to modernize transportation networks and bring outdated city infrastructure into the 21st century.”

Why do we just accept traffic? Why do we tolerate sitting in our cars on congested roads for longer than we need to? With all the advancements in technology we’ve experienced, why is traffic still an issue?
What happened to the future?
At Miovision, we want to change the future. It’s time to modernize our transportation networks, and bring outdated city infrastructure into the 21st century.
In 2004, Miovision came to life in Tony Brijpaul’s mother’s basement. Tony, Kevin Madill and I convened daily in our tiny “office”, which basically consisted of 3 vintage bean bag chairs. We spent countless hours envisioning how we could use video to capture data. Previously, I had worked at a traffic management company counting cars on the side of the road. Not exactly riveting work, I know. The slow, manual process involved in assessing traffic flow seemed archaic to me. I knew there had to be a better way to count cars!
Within a few months, we felt we were onto something. We upgraded from bean bag chairs to actual desks when we moved into the Accelerator Centre. In 2007, we launched the first generation of Miovision’s Video Collection Unit. By 2011, we had launched Scout, our 3rd generation Video Collection Unit and, as of May 2014, we had processed over 1.5 million hours of video.
Miovision has grown out of a simple idea into a team of 75 employees with offices in Kitchener-Waterloo and Cologne, Germany. With over 500 customers in 50 countries, we’re focused on using data to improve the traffic experience for everyone. Thrilled with our success but always looking to the future, our vision has widened. We’ve got some bigger plans and we’re just getting started.
This year, we are bringing cloud-based, traffic management technology to intersections across the world, providing the critical foundations for smart city applications. We believe we can fundamentally change how citizens interact with city infrastructure.
Technology is changing every facet of our lives. Why can’t it be used to make for better cities? Why can’t it be used to reduce traffic?
At Miovision we believe that complacency is never an option. There has to be a better way. When we see the lack of innovation in the transportation management domain it really bothers us. We need to rethink our systems. We need to keep pace with technological innovation. We need to chase the elusive dream of coordinated traffic systems that minimize congestion and empower drivers to make the right decisions. Without improving our transportation systems, our society and economy will struggle to survive.
We will use this investment to accelerate our push to bring affordable, high impact solutions to the world of municipal urban transportation networks. This money is for change. This money is for better cities and happier citizens.
From beanbag chairs to the great opportunity we have in front of us, we won’t stop being humble. But, you’ll be hearing more from us in the months and years to come.
Our investors, our team and our community have empowered us to do big things, and we promise to deliver.
To better cities, happier people and less traffic!
