Every second of delay puts lives at risk
Opticom Emergency Vehicle Preemption (EVP) has been getting first responders to the scene faster and safer for almost 60 years. EVP allows fire trucks, police cars, and other emergency vehicles to efficiently move through urban traffic, minimizing delays at intersections and ensuring rapid responses to critical situations.
Delayed response times
You try and make every second count, yet your response teams are late to the scene because traffic refuses to cooperate. Each red light along the route adds avoidable delay to a call where minutes and seconds determine outcomes.
Intersection crashes
Accidents frequently happen at busy intersections, especially when first responders are moving quickly to save lives. Even with lights and sirens active, the risk of collision with cross-traffic is high in any response.
Costly injuries and settlements
Crashes injure both crews and civilian motorists, regardless of fault. The result is expensive vehicle repairs, medical claims, settlements, and time out of service for both the apparatus and the responders.
Benefits
EVP Benefits
More than just a green light
With Miovision Opticom, first responders move through key corridors and intersections quickly, safely and reliably. Agencies also gain access to a powerful platform with real-time preemption status and historical performance insights.
Faster response times
Opticom EVP reduces response times by up to 25%, helping agencies meet and exceed response standards and improve patient outcomes on time-critical calls.
Fewer intersection crashes
By clearing cross-traffic before the emergency vehicle arrives, Opticom reduces the risk of intersection crashes by up to 70%, protecting both crews and civilian motorists.
Mutual aid coverage
Opticom works with legacy systems and supports customizable deployments. Agencies can maintain mutual aid agreements and stay connected with neighboring jurisdictions, no separate hardware agreements required.
Real-time monitoring
Deploy through internet connected applications and access Miovision One: a centralized platform where agencies can view real-time Opticom equipped vehicle location and signal data, manage their system, and monitor performance.
Intersection analytics
Every preemption event is captured at the intersection, vehicle, and route level, giving your agency a structured data record for operational review, grant reporting, and ongoing system improvement.
Deploy your way
No rip-and-replace required Miovision Opticom gives agencies the flexibility to choose how they deploy and scale. Use software-only, pair software with existing hardware, or upgrade your current system. No complete overhaul needed.
Cloud
Connect vehicles to Opticom through existing integrations with Whelen, Samsara, HAAS Alert, Ericsson, or Semtech. No hardware changes at every intersection. Deploy in days, not months. View performance in Miovision One.

UASI, HSIP, BSIPFrequently asked questions
Emergency vehicle preemption gives fire, police, and EMS vehicles a green light at signalized intersections during an active response. When the vehicle activates lights and siren, Opticom equipped vehicles send a preemption request to equipped intersections, asking for the only green light so the vehicle has a clear, safe path. Cross-traffic is held at a red light to reduce the risk of intersection crashes.
An emergency vehicle preemption system uses an Opticom equipped in-vehicle technology that sends a preemption request to traffic signal controllers along the response route via Cloud, GPS, or IR, depending on what is installed. The controller receives the request, sequences to green on the correct approach, and returns to normal operation once the vehicle clears the intersection.
No. Opticom is designed to work with existing traffic signals and controllers. Agencies can keep current IR equipment in place while adding Cloud or GPS, and can scale corridor by corridor. No rip-and-replace required. Your existing investment is protected as you modernize.
