Many cities, towns and agencies are working to make roads safer, particularly for vulnerable road users (VRU) – pedestrians, cyclists and others not protected by being in a vehicle. According to the US National Highway Safety Administration, VRUs accounted for approximately 20% of traffic fatalities in 2021, an increase in 13% compared to the year before.
