Every day, millions of people navigate complex intersections, both on the roads and in life. At Miovision, we see every intersection as an opportunity: a chance to reduce carbon emissions, improve road safety, and create more livable cities through sustainable technology.
This Earth Month, we’re reflecting on our sustainability journey so far, including our recent recognition as one of Canada’s Greenest Employers by Canada’s Top 100 Employers. In this post, we share how we’re working to build a better future for everyone and prioritize sustainability in tech.
Why Transportation is Key to a More Sustainable Future
Urban transportation accounts for nearly 30% of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States, making it one of the largest contributors to global warming. That’s why Miovision’s mission is rooted in tech and sustainability.
It revolutionizes traffic management using sustainable tech to reduce the environmental impact of traffic congestion, while improving safety and accessibility for all.
Our suite of data-driven technologies helps municipalities optimize signal timing, reduce idling, and make more sustainable choices, from encouraging transit use to supporting active transportation like cycling and walking. Our commitment to the environment doesn’t stop with our customers—we’re actively working to shrink our carbon footprint and lead by example as a sustainable business.
Our Sustainability Journey: From Data to Impact
Our sustainability journey officially began in 2022, when we established a baseline for our carbon emissions. By 2023, we published our first ESG Impact Report, taking the first formal step in measuring and improving our environmental impact across operations, products, and partnerships.
Operational Milestones in 2023
- Offset 100% of emissions from business travel (471.7 tCO2e) through verified carbon offset projects.
- Reduced our headquarters’ energy footprint by subleasing space and utilizing energy-efficient lighting, recirculating water pumps, and sensor-controlled blinds.
- Diverted over 7,000 pounds of metal e-waste through a specialized recycling program.
- Implemented waste reduction strategies and began vetting key suppliers for climate resiliency and labor rights compliance.
These initiatives represent a few ways we’re taking environmental responsibility seriously, setting the stage for even greater impact in the years ahead!
Sustainable Technology in Action
Our technologies are designed with sustainability goals in mind. By supporting cities and agencies with the tools to collect and analyze traffic data, we help them make sustainable choices that reduce energy consumption, optimize public transit, and keep people moving safely and efficiently.
Here are a few sustainability solutions our products offer:
- Multimodal video detection to reduce idling and encourage active transportation.
- Transit signal priority (TSP) to improve bus reliability and increase ridership.
- Emergency vehicle preemption to reduce response times and prevent intersection crashes.
- Traffic safety studies to identify and resolve pedestrian and cyclist hazards, encouraging low-emission travel options.
- Miovision Adaptive to adapt in real-time to changing traffic by optimizing traffic flows every second.
These smart, scalable technology strategies don’t just address traffic issues, they drive meaningful reductions in carbon emissions while contributing to social development and public health.
Scaling Impact: From Safer Streets to Systemic Change
The economic and social development benefits of intelligent traffic systems go hand in hand with environmental progress. When roads are safer and commutes are shorter, cities become more livable, inclusive, and economically resilient.
For example, in Vancouver, British Columbia, there was a 54.8% reduction in near-miss incidents and a 68% increase in cycling volumes after implementing the safety improvements recommended by Miovision.
In Albany, New York, our partnership with the Capital District Transportation Authority led to a 43% reduction in average signal delays and a 22% reduction in average stops made on a red light, enhancing both rider experience and transit efficiency.
These results demonstrate how digital technologies can transform public infrastructure, turning intersections into levers for social progress and a greener future.
A Commitment to Climate Leadership
As a recognized leader in sustainable technology, Miovision is proud to be the 2023 recipient of the McRock Climate Action Award, honoring our innovation and leadership in addressing climate change through smart infrastructure.
Efforts like this reflect our belief that sustainability isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a business model that drives innovation, resilience, and business value.
Leading by Example
Inside Miovision, we’re also building a workplace rooted in sustainable impact. From our inclusive hiring policies to our support for remote work, ergonomic tools, and subsidized public transit, we aim to empower our people to thrive while reducing our energy consumption and reliance on natural resources.
As business leaders, we know that the future of work, like transportation, depends on our ability to adapt and act responsibly. That’s why we’re investing in top talent and creating a culture where every team member plays a role in building futures and sustainable city development.
Engaging Our Community: Green Team Initiatives
Beyond internal operations, Miovision actively engages employees through our Green Team Initiatives. In 2024, we launched a program aimed at fostering environmental stewardship among our staff.
The veritree Partnership is committed to planting one tree per employee each month, totaling over 5,000 trees annually across diverse ecosystems in British Columbia, Florida, and Rwanda.
These initiatives contribute to global reforestation efforts and instill a sense of environmental responsibility within our team. We’re continuing with them through 2025.
Charting the Path Toward a Sustainable Future
While 2023 marked our first formal sustainability report, it won’t be the last. We’re committed to improving our sustainability services, tracking our environmental and social performance, and aligning with global frameworks.
As we grow, our goal is simple: to ensure our environmental impact doesn’t grow with us, and that sustainability in tech is our priority.
Whether we’re innovating new digital products, reimagining urban mobility, or improving our operations, we remain focused on building not just better roads, but a better future for everyone who uses them.
